March 19 - We've just received a note from Chuck M. that Frank Moon, the Grand Old Man of Rhode Island fiddling, passed away yesterday. This is the end of an era in New England fiddling. Frank was over 90 years old and had been the guiding force of the Old Fiddlers Club of Rhode Island for over 50 years. He was a very good fiddler who loved traditional music and did everything in his power to keep it alive. He was Musical Director and Secretary of the Old Fiddlers, the oldest fiddling club in the US, founded in 1929 and continuously active since except for the WW II years. Not more than a year ago I sat with him and had a fun chat about fiddling - he played a very clean and lively version of Speed the Plow... Our prayers and supportive wishes are with his wife and family.

Special: (commentary from BCMFest website) "The Deadly Sins and Four Horsemen It's not exactly a Battle of the Sexes, but the 2007 Boston Celtic Music Fest will feature two unique collaborations that are gender opposites of one another. The two bands .. one all-male, the other all-female, each boasting some of the area's more prominent Celtic performers .. will make their debuts within hours of each other on Saturday at the festival's Sanctuary stage, located in the First Parish Church of Harvard. Appearing at 3:30 p.m. will be Four Horsemen, with a line-up of: Eric Merrill (fiddle, banjo), renowned for his Irish/Appalachian crossover; singer-raconteur Brian O'Donovan, host of WGBH-FM's "A Celtic Sojourn"; Michael Boyle, an acclaimed Irish step-dancer who has toured extensively with the group Cherish the Ladies; Patrick Murray, a talented practitioner and maker of the Uilleann pipes; Ted Davis (flute, banjo) and Martin Langer (bouzouki, banjo), two of the most popular and sought-after musicians in the local session and band scene. Rounding out the group is guitarist Matt Heaton, who along with his wife Shannon comprises one of Boston's best-loved Celtic music duos. Shannon Heaton (flute, whistle), meanwhile, will be part of the other "super group," The Deadly Sins, who will take the Sanctuary stage at 2:15 p.m. Her fellow Sinners include a phalanx of fine fiddlers: Laura Cortese, who is equally celebrated for her vocal and step-dancing excellence; Hanneke Cassel, also an accomplished pianist; Lissa Schneckenburger, a skilled contra dance musician who is at home performing in folk clubs and concert halls; and Tina Lech, a mainstay of Greater Boston sessions."
