Technology in the Ancient World, Henry Hodges, 1970, 1992 "...it is therefore much more than just a possibility that man's first interest in metallic copper was aroused while he was in fact searching for a suitable green pigment with which to make eye shadow." p55 J. Bronowski The Ascent of Man 1973 "...fire has been known to early man for about four hundred thousand years, we think. p124 George Sarton A History of Science 1959

"The Egyptians practiced the art of Chemistry, mining and purifying gold, silver and copper, and making dyes and embalming fluids. They called this art 'khermia' and it flourished until the 7th century when the Arabs took it over. The Egyptian word 'khermia' became the Arab word 'alkhemia' and is now the English word 'alchemy.' We use the word 'alchemy' now to refer to all the activities resembling chemistry which took place from about 300 C.E. to about 1600 C.E." (see Sherman and Sherman Essential Concepts of Chemistry p4)
